What a difference a day makes. After 12 months of planning, thousands of volunteer hours, and over 10,000 entries prepared for showing, Cyclone Debbie wreaked havoc through Queensland and northern New South Wales. Wiping out everything in its path including show Thursday. The thoughts and prayers of the RASQ family are with all those affected by the cyclone.
Fortunately no significant damage was done to the grounds and show Saturday particularly was well supported.
We only had two weeks to clean up after the show before four major horse events based themselves on the grounds in April and May.
The first was the Qld Welsh Pony Show which attracted competitors from across Queensland and Northern NSW with over 200 horses stabled on site for three days.
Following a two day turnaround Landmark conducted their very successful Stock Horse Challenge, Cam pd raft and Sale. This event is now the second largest event of its type in Australia. Over 300 horses went under the hammer over the 4 day event.
With the campdraft arena still erected, the Toowoomba Working Cowhorse Club staged their Annual Stockhorse Challenge utilising both the Main Arena and Indoor Arena. In only its second year this event has almost doubled in size.
Another event showing significant growth is the Toowoomba Et District Showjump Club One Day Event. More than 200 horses competed in Dressage, Showjumping and Cross Country. The committee do a great job on the course with the addition of new jumps and course design. In particular the new water can jump just south of the lake looks fantastic.
With almost 600 horses competing over the past month and the majority of competitors and exhibitors coming from outside the region, it is estimated that more than $250,000 will have been spent in Toowoomba over that period.
Nitro Circus Regional Tour hit Toowoomba in the second weekend in May attracting in excess of 4,000 patrons to the venue. It is the first time Nitro has been back in town for three years and it was certainly an event not to be missed.
Another new event to come to the Showgrounds is the Brick Event. Let your imagination run wild on the Lego Build Tables, go vertical with the Build Wall and get your designs moving with the Build a Train Play Area. With so much lego on site this will be one event not to miss.
The CMMA Events Militaria Fair is back at the end of the month with a massive collection of militaria and antiques to inspect.
Since the show there will have been more than 30 events covering 88 event days again proving that the Toowoomba Showgrounds is the premier event destination in the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region.
